I love my Volvo. It is quick, comfortable, and good looking. It is, however, currently throwing a temper tantrum because of, we hope, a failing battery. It also turns seven this December. As it is my “reliable” “daily driver” I’ve been pondering what I would replace it with if I chose to and... honestly I’m not coming up with much. That is where you come in!
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
Under $50,000
2014 or newer
Power to weight ratio of 175 HP/TON or greater (Reference: Volvo is 250HP at 3300 pounds) and a good amount of torque (Volvo as ~300)
Manual Transmission
Do not want: BMW, Audi, Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Challenger
Vehicle should be stock
Located in the US
Not looking for specific listings (though those are welcome), just ideas.

BMW, Audi, Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Challenger
Camaro aside, those were some of my first suggestions! haha
Beyond that,
Cadillac ATS-V maybe?

Haha yeah I fully realize that is the requirement that makes this a hard question.

My Audi threw a temper tantrum when the battery went south. I was so freaked I actually took it to the damn dealer, thinking the electrics had gotten fried somehow. Nope, just a dying battery.
Oh, and for the car: Golf R.

I’ve honestly never looked into them. What is the power to weight ratio on these?

So, uh... is that ‘lil volvo up for sale? *wink wink

Ignore #5 and get an S4. Or maybe an ATS-V or V-Sport?

My Fiesta has the MR230 pack (can be factory ordered in Europe). 230hp 250lbft at 2300lbs (roughly).
Focus ST 252hp, 270lbft at 3223lbs
Focus RS 300+ hp and torque at a similar weight

My current new car list has very similar requirements. Here’s my short list:
New/Used Mustang GT with performance pack
Used Charger/Challenger 392 Scat Pack or...maybe a Hellcat
Used R35 GT-R (prices are creeping down toward $40K slowly)
Used Cadillac ATS-V
Used Audi S5 Sportback, or maybe an A7
There could be a BMW in there, not positive, would have to be some sort of CPO option (same with the Audis
)
.

the Golf R seems like the next logical step for some one upgrading from a C30. 300hp at the same weight as the Volvo.

Have you considered a C7? 2014 loaded Z51s with no mileage are under $50k. Even the base cars are great, reliable, and under $40k.

I’ve driven all three (Focus ST and RS on camera) and they’re pretty great. Bummer to see them leave the Ford lineup.

SS and be done with it.

Porsche boxster/Cayman.
Subaru WRX STi
Civic type R
Focus RS
Mazda Miata RF
Chevrolet SS

the R is the most logical choice. The C30 was a quir ky alternative to the Golf. Since. if you want to upgrade from a GTI , you get an R. SO buy the VW since Volvo doesn’t make a quirky option anymore.

Great car. I still wrestle with GTI vs. R on a daily driver basis. I beat on a GTI around Dominion Raceway not too long ago and it was so much fun. The R that I tested was mostly on the highway. Super comfortable and enjoyable, had a hard time justifying the huge price difference between a nicely spec’d GTI.

Personally I’d go R for the AWD. I don’t want to go back to daily driving a FWD car in the winter. I’m too spoiled.

True, I drove both in good weather. That definitely makes a difference.

This this this. Decided to scroll down before commenting this. You can get CPO Corvettes with stuff like the 2lt (mmm heated and ventillated seats) and Z51 for about $45k.

If you can find one with a manual
Or a used CTS-V
![]() 11/14/2018 at 13:34 |

2015.5 V60 R Design. Still has the 6 cylinder engine. Or get a 2018 with the supercharged and turbo’d 4. Y ou can find them brand new for $45k-ish.

Golf R or Focus RS
If you don’t want a hatchback, the previous Mustang GT.
If you want to stret ch your budget, then M2.

If you like it, just keep it. Or, V60, or Giulia.

The 4C or Giulia would be in my garage if it weren’t for the lack of 3 pedals.

Chrysler 300, seeings you said no Charger.
Drive the 8-speed auto, it made me love autos a little bit.

Golf R

Not sure if enough power to qualify or if our because BMW, but MINI? Fun, quick, easy to find with 3 pedals.

I test drove a used S in 2009 and didn’t like that particular one, so I haven’t really looked back at them. It drove really strange (buckets of turbo lag and I think the clutch may have been slipping) and the sunroof broke during the test drive.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:01 |

The quality is quite improved since then. I admit t he r56 does have some turbo lag, I’m only assuming the newer f-series 2.0 is better that way too.
Keep your Volvo running, there’s just not many appealing newer choices.

I could've sworn you could get the Giulia that way
